The findings of new research published in the Journal ′PAIN Reports′ revealed a link between opioid use disorders (OUD) and chronic pain. But the exact mechanism through which the brain caused the pain in OUD remained unknown.

The research included 141 participants. They provided their responses to questions about pain interference, quality of life, views about pain, and expectations for the treatment of pain and addiction. The eight life domains that were measured by the researchers to determine the quality of life included general health, physical functioning, mental health, social functioning, vitality, bodily pain, role limitations brought on by physical health issues, and limitations brought by emotional issues.

The observations revealed that patients with OUD had lower quality of life and had more central sensitization. They stated that pain was the main cause for the onset of their opioid addiction, for discontinuing addiction treatment, continuing and increasing their opioid use, and causing fear about experiencing OUD relapse in the future.

The study provided evidence and the need to evaluate central sensitization in OUD, which can help doctors and researchers develop better treatments for persons with chronic pain and OUD and assist them in overcoming their addiction and pain. (ETHealthWorld, July 12, 2022)
